I ordered from BT.  Cost was $15 plus $14 UPS but I was desperate.  Leaving Sat for a trip to help Accross Nations with stations in Window Rock AZ and Tuba City AZ.  I have quite a list to accomplish.

Re: Need help with an old tower lighting system

Ken Bass

A couple of times out of desperation, I have replaced H&P photocells by going to Home Depot or Lowe's Home Centers and buying an "eye" from the electrical isle for under $15 bucks designed to mount in an electrical box to control outdoor signs or lighting.   Bored an appropriate size hole in the H&P Box and wired in the new "eye".   Seems like in on case, I had to add a 110vac armature relay to make sure I had heavy enough contacts to carry the current.  I pointed the eye in the correct direction and, to my knowledge, that lash-up still turns those tower lights on every evening and off every morning.

You can do a little internet shopping for that FAA certified photo cell and save some money. Your electrical supply house can supply the socket.
Just did that on the tower I'm in charge of.

Re: Need help with an old tower lighting system

Don't worry about the looks.  The main thing is it FFA certified.  You will need to find a twist lock socket (think outlet)  that will fit.  It looks to me like the same design as used on Mercury Vapor pole lights. Use the photocell to turn on a contactor (relay) that has the capacity to handle the load.  This isn't difficult to do and will keep an older system running

Re: RDS & New Vehicles

Bill Hurne

Greg,

I ran across some radios that don’t display the 64 character RT field unless it is encoded with RT Plus.   If no RT Plus, the RT doesn’t display at all.   RT Plus is an add on feature of RT that splits the title and artist into two separate fields.

Just more to add to the many, many standards of radios out there.

I put a Kenwood radio in my truck with a display button.   Pressing the button toggles the radio display between Frequency – PS – RT – RT+.   This is the most flexible RDS radio I found, nicely displays all the possible fields.

Greg,

RDS isa standard that every receiver manufacturer interprets differently.  The good thing about standards is that there are so many of them...

I have installed several RDS encoders and found that almost no two radios display it the same way.

If you are trying to use dynamic PS, there is even more madness.  My old 2007 Ram would dutifully display dynamic PS as well as scrolling or long RT messages via it's INFO button.  My new Ram scrolls the PS once and hangs forever on the last 8 characters of the too long PS.  My new Ram will show about the first 32 (IIRC) characters of a long or scrolling RT and offers no way to see the rest of it.

One of my clients using a PiraCZ encoder has a vehicle that displays the dynamic PS & RT perfectly and another vehicle displays only the RT...  Another shows the scrolling PS but nothing of the RT whether scrolling, long or short.

I would suggest putting test txt in the various fields to ID them on various radios and then play with your txt lengths and locations to find a good compromise (if one exists...).

Be aware that a lot of radios store the PS field until the PI changes...

I am sure that there are a million RDS war stories on the list...

Barry,

That sounds like the preamble that is found on the website player.  This is a commercial religious AM so it doesn't matter if it has a commercial but just wanted to make sure that they were going to be using the correct version as far as SRN was concerned.  The ftp version that has the "Town Hall dot Com" preamble may be the commercial.

Hi Greg,

You have asked the million dollar question, though the answer is not nearly that lucrative.

The answer is that different radio manufacturers decide how they are going to display the RDS information to the user.  The main visible fields in RDS are the PTY code, which is your station’s format, which in your case is Religious Music.  Then there is the PS field which is an 8 character field that ‘originally’ was supposed to be static and identified your station.  You might have seen LIVE 105, or BBC-3 or FROG FM.  Then there is the Radio Text field that is up to 64 characters and was designed to be dynamic with artist and song title or station contact information.

I have a Ford F150 which only shows the PTY and PS fields.  There is nothing I can do (believe me I’ve tried) to display the Radio Text Field.  My daughter-in-law has a Subaru.  When she first tunes to a station it shows the PS field and then after 5 seconds or so it shows the Radio Text data.  There is no way to go back and show only PS without retuning the station.

Because of these ‘issues’ with different radios and how the radio manufacturer decided to display the RDS info, broadcasters are mixed on what they send to each field.  Some broadcasters send the data to the PS field, some to the Radio Text field and some send it to both.

I'm trying to figure out why older cars can view our RDS information on their radios with scrolling song and artist data, but newer vehicles with RDS don't show anything but this..... "Religious Music" and our wesbite, no scrolling info?

Am I missing something?

We use an Inovonics 1730 for RDS.    Thoughts???
